Very interesting response about denominations. I largely agree with it.

I tend to want to a future where all groups that honor the Jewish tradition in a serious fashion be part of the conversation of of being Jewish to celebrate that kind of pluralism, even one that might move away from the paradigm of having a single synagogue.

As a personal matter, I really wish to gather as much as wisdom I can, regardless of the denomination, even if I take ideas seriously and recognize that groups differ.

Because I'm significantly influenced by non-Jewish paths such as Zen Buddhism and modern Paganism, I naturally gravitate to Jewish renewal, but I can't say I need to affiliate that way, either. I'm part of a chevurah that's chosen to affiliate with Reconstructionist Judaism, but don't feel the need to call myself a Reconstuctionist Jew, either.

Besides the expense of membership, another reason for the diminishing attractiveness of synagogues is the liturgy. It remains to be seen how many people not presently affiliated will be enticed by the ambient theism of Jewish services made all the more assertive by new siddurim such as Mishkan T'filah.

On the other hand, far-thinking congregations which perceive the cognitive dissonance between siddur and sensibility might make room for either nontheistic or non specifically-religious opportunities for Jews to come together as Jews to learn to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly.
